This cultural landscape offers a broad panoramic view of the Appalachian mountain range beneath a wide open sky that is occupied by a scattering of farmlands at distant intervals, which to me represents a scene ''typiquement Memphremagog.'' The smooth highway in the foreground links one township to the next, and encourages travellers and tourists to explore the region- if only for an afternoon. Highways and roads such as this did much to enhance the tourism industry following the rise of the middle class after WWII- as motels and campsites sprang up all over the countryside to welcome the new recreationers, as postcards from this era so convincingly illustrate.
